Yohimbe   Click to listen highlighted text! Yohimbe / Yohimbine is a drug that dilates the blood vessels of the skin and mucous membranes. Botanical Name: Phaleria octandra

It has been used to lower blood pressure, as an antidiuretic, for angina pectoris and for treatment of atherosclerosis and impotence but there is no scientific evidence to back this up. It does increase the reflex excitability of the lower region of the spinal cord and is said to have a local anesthetic effect.

“The bark of this topical tree has been ingested, sniffed, smoked and rubbed on the body for its effect on sexual interest and performance. Like many aphrodisiacs, however, yohimbe bark is not all that it’s cracked up to be. It may cause temporary impotence — certainly a step in the wrong direction — and other far more serious side effects.” Rodale’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs

The use of Yohimbe has a lot of do’s and don’ts. This is not an herb to experiment with. Symptoms of overdose include weakness, nervous stimulation followed by paralysis, fatigue, stomach disorders and ultimately, death.

The Food and Drug Administration considers yohimbine an unsafe drug.
